The Health and Care workforce

Social Health Protection and Human Resources for Health

All of us need care at different times in our lives. We need care to survive in infancy, when we suffer an accident or illness, whether the impact is short, chronic or long-term, to support families and households, and to ensure the best possible quality of life as we age, including at the close of life. However, health and care work throughout the world is characterized by a range of decent work deficits, which impact retention and attractiveness in the sector as well as quality of care.

Ensuring decent work in the health sector
  • Good training and career prospects;
    • Establishing minimum educational and training requirements, ensuring access to education, training and lifelong learning
  • Fair remuneration and work condition:
    • decent working time and rest period arrangements, prevention of excessive hours of work, regulation and compensation of inconvenient hours and shift work
  • Adequate social protection, occupational safety & health;
  • Participation in planning and decision making through social dialogue
  • Ensuring recruitment and retention for a sustainable health workforce
