Brazil. Cadastro Único- Operating a registry through a national public bank
Summary
This brief presents the Cadastro Único as a successful social protection floor experience from Brazil and gives a practical example of how social protection floors can be implemented.
Cadastro Único is a unique and centralized database covering one third of Brazil’s population.
Since its implementation in 2001, Cadastro Único has been part of the Government’s national social protection strategy focused on poverty eradication (Plano Brasil Sem Miséria) to identify poor populations and their needs and centralize all this information in a single registry.
The main challenge facing Cadastro Único remains the maintenance of such a complex database.
